Motivating our youth is not an easy task. It takes a team – a community, to do so. At Motivate, we firmly believe in the mission to get our kids to be more active and develop habits that they will carry into adulthood. Since 1956, when President Eisenhower created the President’s Council on Youth Fitness, many administrations have worked hard to inspire children to be more active. Many may not know that there still exists the President’s Challenge Fitness Award, which is given to kids who can successfully meet the requirements. And a council of professional athletes, including Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes and New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees, actively work hard to inspire our young people! But the question is, how can we, in our community, make a difference for our youth?
Science has shown us that the more active our children are, the better their performance in school, the more focus they will have, and the more helpful, supportive, and compassionate they become in their friendship or family units…the list goes on. So how do we, as a community, rally together and help make a very real difference in the future of our children when it comes to their physical health? Our first solution is the easiest solution: Encouraging activity at home – leading by example. We can do this by planning daily walks together after dinner, or family workouts in the backyard that make our children breath hard, sweat, laugh, and result in an overall positive family interaction. Making this a part of their lives has shown to greatly increase the longevity of fitness throughout their entire life.
A Second Solution
On October 1, 2017 Motivate Personal Fitness Academy will be hosting the 2nd Annual Motivate Our Youth 5k Fun Run. All proceeds will benefit ACUSD Elementary P.E. Programs. Through the decades, and especially the last ten years, a stark reduction of funding from the State of California means that it is up to each elementary school site to raise their own funds for physical education. At Motivate, we believe it is our duty to give back to this community that we love, and inspire our youth to live a long, healthy life. Reach out to your neighbors, friends, and family and spread the word about our 5k fun run. We promise to provide a morning of inspiration, high energy, fun, and the motivation our youth needs to get and stay active and healthy.

P.S. One of my favorite quotes is by Nelson Mandela, because it can be applied to so many things in life, including fitness: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” I believe we can make a huge impact on our youth. All we need is a community, a mission, and an understanding that our children are always watching.
